Why MedBoardWatch.com?

by Frank Lucido MD
This page Updated 1/26/05

On July 30, 2004, I announced to the Medical Board of California's Division of Medical Quality: (MBC DMQ)

"I will be monitoring all cases that come to my attention of doctors being investigated for having recommended cannabis.  I will be posting all pertinent documents on a new website I will be creating:  MedBoardWatch.com".

BACKGROUND:

I see 2 diverging but equally true realities:

  • Doctors have been afraid to recommend medical cannabis.
  • Doctors should never be fearful of practicing good and compassionate medicine.

PURPOSE

My purpose is to educate doctors, attorneys, law enforcement, legislators, patients and patient advocates on:

  1. The safety and effectiveness of medicinal cannabis.
  2. The laws that apply to medicinal cannabis, and legal judgments/precedents:

  3. Why and how doctors come to be investigated for having recommended medical cannabis.
  4. What standards will be most protective of patients and doctors in recommending this safe and effective medicine.  What is the range of standards that exist?

FURTHER INTENTIONS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR THIS SITE

  1. To forward allegations of law enforcement non-compliance with the law to appropriate resources.
  2. Track all Medical Board of California actions against physicians regarding medical cannabis.
  3. Links to continuing education resources.
  4. Possibly a conference for physicians to learn more about medical cannabis?

MY GOAL

My goal is also to continue the work we have begun towards normalizing medical cannabis practice. I would like to see more primary care physicians (and treating specialists) give safe and appropriate recommendations for medical cannabis, since they know the patient best, and have the best documentation of the serious illness for which they have been following the patient. But until medical cannabis and its safety become, I believe more widely known to the primary care and specialist community, there will be a need for medical cannabis consulting physicians as a specialty, to fill the compassionate need of many sick patients.
